A Guide to Scoring Norwegian Cruise Deals

cruise next ncl

I booked our cruise yesterday not  knowing about the double up. However, when you go to pay it asks you if you want to use your coupons /credit (not sure what the terminology was) and states that you can click on and use any 2. Since they were also offering an extra 10% off that counted as one of my “coupons”. Placeholder reservations cannot be used on select cruise sail dates, including those taking place over major holidays. They may also not be used for guaranteed room categories (where Disney chooses your cabin location) or combined with other rate specials.

The Norwegian Difference

I have a reservation for an October 2023 cruise. Assume I know nothing so walk me through the steps please! I just went onto their website and made a payment of $250, choosing one of my deposits as the payment type, after already having two deposits applied. If I cancel and rebook my room, the DSC will be higher than it is today. But it still may be several hundred dollars savings to use certificates.

Cruises

Although it may be difficult to find deals at first, once you know where and when to look, it becomes much easier. Yes....I just applied the 3rd to a booking we made on June 5th, which already had 2CN's applied. You were lucky - my 2nd one keeps getting returned when I make a price adjustment to a reservation. But no worries, I just put it back on when the "any cabin" special comes back the next month. But one is purchased on the ship and one is not. Usage terms and $$ value amounts can vary too.

Explore Your Cruise Vacation

Or am I mis-remembering that it was ever possible? I've never purchased one before, what was hoping to pick a few up on my Feb cruise since I am clearly addicted at this point. Wherever and whenever you choose to cruise, why not take advantage of the CruiseNext program to save money on your current cruise? After all, if you love to cruise, it's never too soon to start planning your next adventure. Visit the Norwegian website to find out everything you need to know about the CruiseNext program and other exclusive offers.

Learn About Credit Cards

You'll get Early Saver rates with price protection, upgrades, 50% off standard deposits and up to $50 per stateroom or up to $100 per suite in onboard credit. Don't worry if you don't know exactly when you want to cruise or where you want to go. Norwegian gives you plenty of time to work out the details later.

I couldn't use two certificates when trying to do my reservation on line, but the NCL rep was able to use both certificates on each cruise when he made the reservations. If you’re going to book a cruise with NCL, and don’t have a Cruise Next in your account, it makes sense to buy a Cruise First before booking the cruise. What’s the difference between the cruise first and cruise Next?

Is NCL Canceling Cruises in 2023?

Plus, folks in vacation mode already have their wallets open, ready to spend on more fun. And yes, if you cancel the cruise before final payment, the certificates are returned back to your account. You can view your existing certificates in  your online NCL account to see their expiration dates. I was on an online chat with the website I booked it through (CruisesOnly), and that online chat agent was wrong.

However, I'm not able to find an FAQ or Term indicating that non-refundable OBC can't be used to pay the daily service charge. I found it in an NCL blog from 2017, so I think it's been pretty well known non-refundable OBC can't be used for DSCs. The "pre-publication" rumor I saw only indicated 3- 4 days if I remember correctly. There are times when, as a CAS guest, my total expenditure is less than $500.

Celebrity Cruises' Future Cruise Vacation program

cruise next ncl

However, it’s well-documented that if you don’t spend it onboard you are only charged $250 for two CN certs. The cruise next OBC they give you comes off the original charge if you don’t use any of it. Always re-verify that amenities aren't changed or lost, etc. afterward. Going through a TA we had to have the TA apply the third CN certificate for a 2023 sailing, but all I had to do was email them and they did all the work. I would do a mock booking for FAS to see how that works out.

Each cruiser may purchase four $300 deposits, each of which can be applied one per booking on future cruises for you or your travel mates. The deposits are transferable once to another traveler. Current promotions have doubled the Sailor Loot to $600 until further notice. Not only will an onboard booking almost always involve a lower deposit to hold the cruise, but it likely will get you the best available promotional offer and earn you valuable onboard credit. Savvy cruisers often max out onboard opportunities by booking all their cruises on board or by paying open-ended deposits on future cruises they can book at their leisure.

The smarter move, as suggested above, would be to add additional items to your reservation, such as prepaying the onboard service charge. If you meant CruiseFirst, yes you could buy one today and apply to your September booking as long as you don’t have a CN cert on it already. Also to answer your question about an add on. A sail away rate is cabin type that ends with an X ( OX, BX, etc.) so even if you added something it wouldn’t change your cabin type. If you find yourself enjoying the cruise you're on, one way to save on your next vacation at sea is to book it on board your cruise ship or, in some cases, immediately upon returning home.

cruise next ncl

I'm on the phone with a booking agent with the website, and she's applying it to a pre-existing reservation that I booked 7 months ago. No other cruise line offers extra loyalty program points for booking on board. When you are on board a cruise ship, you can save on your next cruise and the one you're on by purchasing CruiseNext deposits in either $250 or $500 denominations.

The onboard booking perks do not apply to cruises shorter than three days, world cruises, Grand Voyages or segments of those longer sailings. If you need to cancel the cruise you booked on board, you can apply the deposit to another voyage but you'll forfeit the onboard credit. Book your next cruise with the future cruise consultant on board a Holland America ship and you will get onboard credit and pay a reduced deposit. Amounts vary based on length of the booked cruise and cabin category. Celebrity Cruises' onboard booking program offers two options — Book Now and Book Later. Both offers give you initial deposits as low as $100, as well as up to $500 in onboard credit (based on cabin category and length of sailing) on your next cruise.

If you miss that cutoff date, again, you may lose the deposit. DW and I have purchased 16 on each of our last two cruises. All but two of those 32 are currently applied via double up offers to future cruises. The deposit can be used on bookings made within the next two years.

It will be applied first to your CruiseNext Credit purchase before being applied to any other fees in your onboard account. Book your next MSC cruise on board a ship, and you'll receive $20 to $200 in onboard credit per cabin, based on the length of the sailing booked and the cabin category. You can also earn double points with the MSC Voyagers Club loyalty program.

Top 10 Mardi Gras Cruises

Like most large-sized newbuilds, the new Carnival ship Mardi Gras is LNG-powered, with 4x Caterpillar Marine LNG engines (model MaK 16M-46DF) generating combined output 57,2 MW. The propulsion system is based on two Azimuting thrusters with combined power output 37 MW. The ship has 3x LNG tanks (cryogenic steel) with total capacity ~3200 m3. Two of the tanks are larger (length 35 m / 115 ft, diameter 8 m / 26 ft, gas capacity 1525 m3), while the 3rd tank has length 28 m (92 ft), diameter 5 m (16 ft) and gas capacity 520 m3. The ship's bunkering takes ~8 hours and her LNG capacity is enough for ~14 days of operation (navigation and onboard electricity production). Cabin balconies are accessed via sliding floor-ceiling glass doors.

“The easier they can make the transit in and out of the port also helps and the business dealings between us and the port in terms of booking berth space. They should just be straight-forward in how they deal with us,” he added. Another ship, Carnival Glory, went on an over two-week-long hiatus to upgrade several spots on the ship, the news release said. A new bar and lounge dedicated to Army veterans and active duty military and a photography studio are some of the latest additions.

Now, Chef Rudi has brought his extraordinary skills to Carnival Mardi Gras by launching his specialty seafood restaurant, Rudi’s Seagrill. Carnival’s Seaday Brunch is popular among guests, so we avoided standing in line using the HUB app. Our table was ready in about ten minutes, and while we were waiting, we used the HUB app to check out the menu. All cabin bathrooms feature the fleet's first glass-door showers and in-shower shaving bar. Over 70% of all staterooms are outside, 300 pairs are connecting/family cabins. On December 14, 2018, Carnival announced that the new Mardi Gras will have the industry's first roller coaster at sea. The facility ("BOLT Ultimate Sea Coaster") will be built by Maurer Rides (Munich Germany-based company) specializing in roller coaster design and manufacturing.

The April 6, 2024 cruise on the Carnival Mardi Gras departs from Port Canaveral, Florida. On this 7 Night Eastern Caribbean sailing, the ship will visit a total of 4 different cruise port destinations, including its departure port. The November 2, 2024 cruise on the Carnival Mardi Gras departs from Port Canaveral, Florida.

It's the place to get done the kind of stuff you just can't seem to do anywhere else — reconnect with your partner, finish that book, or do absolutely, blissfully, nothing at all. Ok, a few places — get ready for six distinct onboard zones featuring brand-new experiences for spectacularly getting down to food, drink and fun. Changes include a new casino layout, including a nonsmoking area, and a Heroes Tribute Bar & Lounge that pays deference to military veterans and active-duty service members, taking over the SkyBox Sports Bar. Also added were a Dreams Photography Studio and upgrades within the spa. Carnival ships also call at other corporate-managed destinations, including Amber Cove, Grand Turk and Half Moon Cay.

Stateroom balconies were also redone with new windows and doors and every stateroom had new LED lighting and bathroom nightlights added. He is a regular guest on Good Morning America (TV show) and has hosted 2000+ shows on Food Network (US pay-TV channel). Lagasse Restaurant offers New Orleans cuisine, including spicy creole specialties. Menu items include muffuletta sandwiches, oyster and cochon de lait po-boys, gumbo, jambalaya, side dishes (Creole potato salad with diced scallions, red beans, jazz-man rice), desserts (Bananas Foster, lemon icebox pie). For Breakfast are also offered Shrimp & Grits, and Shrimp Creole Omelet.

The Carnival Mardi Gras is included in the cruise line's XL Class. In the cruise ship stats below you'll find the Carnival Mardi Gras vs all other Carnival ships. At $119 per person (as of March 2024), this small group multi-course dining experience is a splurge – but it’s a VIP experience for just 14 guests hosted by the Master Executive Chef. The atrium’s huge 3,000 square-foot glass panels built into the ship’s side provide guests with beautiful sea views. It’s a wonderful place to relax, listen to live music, or participate in games and contests. The innovative three-deck-high Grand Central Atrium space is one of Carnival Mardi Gras’ six themed zones – and it’s a winner.

Try to make reservations for a time during the first part of your cruise in case you need to reschedule due to weather. Take a look at this photo gallery to help you envision your perfect vacation. Check out Deck 6 on Carnival Mardi Gras, where you’ll find all the Cajun-spiced fun you want.

One downside to the Carnival Mardi Gras cruise ship is that while there are lots of venues, some are too small to handle a rush. The traditional theater can only seat 900 at a time, and both the popular Piano Bar and Punchliner Comedy Club are laughably small. The fitness center is also overly packed on sea days, while on Elegant Nights, the main dining rooms have long lines as people are drawn by the temptation of free lobster. The first one on everyone's list is the Carnival Mardi Gras roller coaster Bolt, the first roller coaster at sea -- a genuine thrill ride you need to try at least once. And then there's the Atrium, located on the side of the ship instead of the center, a placement that allows the space to have three-story sea views during the day and become a top-notch entertainment space at night.

Frequent cruisers may notice the new decor and furnishings across all public areas on the ship. During the day, there's plenty of golfing, tennis, and swimming. The new Mardi Gras has Carnival fleet's second "Big Chicken" restaurant at sea (by Shaquille O'Neal). Debuting on Carnival Radiance in 2021, Big Chicken by Shaq is located aft on Lido Deck. Many menu items are developed by the basketball player himself, the rest are based on the star's favorite food recipes. Available on all Fun Ships is Chef's Table (VIP dining experience / 12-guest capacity) that includes multicourse dinner with ship's Master Chef, private cocktail reception and galley/kitchen tour.

The pool didn't seem to be closed during the party on my sailing, so it's unclear whether swimming will be allowed during the event. "Awaken" focuses on a series of fever dream-style numbers, and incorporates creative costumes and "Oh, wow!" dance steps with well-known songs. My particular favorites included one that evoked the '80s with some Bruno Mars tunes and "Stranger Things" vibes and another that's what I imagine you'd get if Janet Jackson were a character in "The Matrix." In my opinion, this is the show not to miss. This blog helps over a million people to plan their cruises each month.

First look at Celebrity Ascent: This elegant new cruise ship is perfect for entertainment buffs and solo travelers

The next-largest culinary development on board is at Eden Restaurant, which focuses on delicious Mediterranean cuisine for $85 per person or $120 for tasting menus. Unfortunately, it wasn't available during my sailing when I asked, so I wasn't able to try it. However, I absolutely adored the bazaar bowl with chilled labneh, beets, cucumber, almonds and naan bread and the sheep's milk gnocchi I ordered off the standard menu.

Sunset Bar is open to the elements, so while not often suitable for a damp and drizzly day on France's Atlantic coast in April, we can't think of a better spot to enjoy sundowners when sailing in the Mediterranean or Caribbean. Shortly after the celebrations, Celebrity Ascent departed Saint-Nazaire for a transatlantic journey to the Caribbean, where it will spend the winter season. But there's little rest for the builders at Chantiers — the cycle now begins anew with Celebrity Xcel. Before we celebrated Celebrity Ascent's delivery, we were treated to a special steel-cutting ceremony for the next Edge-class ship, Celebrity Xcel, due to be delivered in 2025. That ship will have the first tri-fuel engines in the Royal Caribbean Group fleet. "These engines will allow us to burn traditional fuels as well as methanol," Liberty said.

things I loved and 4 things I hated about Celebrity Ascent

The leafy Moroccan design courtesy of Berkus features a range of seating, from tables and bar stools to shaded cabanas (for sitting, not lounging). Instead of being a carbon copy of siblings Celebrity Edge, launched in 2018, and Celebrity Apex, launched in 2021, Celebrity Beyond is longer (by almost 69 feet), taller (by one deck) and offers a raft of new and reworked features. Seven-night Caribbean itineraries on Celebrity Ascent start from $767 per person; book your voyage at celebritycruises.com.

The cruise line took delivery of the brand-new Edge Class ship at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in St. Nazaire, France. As a sucker for sweets, I couldn't help but try the strawberry creme brulee while marveling at the French-style desserts available. I felt like I was in a local patisserie in Paris looking at the delicate display of pastries and sweets - certainly not something I'd expect to find on a cruise ship. On a brighter note, we made our way to the top deck while looking for the Oceanview Cafe buffet for lunch. The Solarium is a signature venue on both Celebrity and Royal Caribbean ships. Along with bars, the Grand Atrium is a natural gathering location with its high-energy and welcoming environment.

Celebrity Ascent Suite Bathroom

I was surprised to see the minimum age for the Solarium on Celebrity Ascent was still 16 years old, as Royal Caribbean recently increased the age limit on their ships to 18 years of age and older. Along with the World Class Bar, you can watch your favorite sports team at Craft Social. This area has numerous TVs, so you won’t miss the big game during your cruise.

After the Caribbean season, from December to April, the Celebrity Ascent will cross the Atlantic and begin its sailings in Europe for the summer of 2024, specifically in the Mediterranean region. While in Europe for the summer of 2024, Celebrity Ascent will visit countries such as Greece, Italy, Turkey, Spain, and France. Like other Edge Class ships, Celebrity Ascent has an immersive-style theatre that is unlike anything at sea. The Theatre has multiple stages, moving staircases, and curved screens to blur the lines between the stage and the audience. Eden is filled with greenery on the walls and ceiling, which is accented with green decor around the space.

The Newest Celebrity Ships Being Built

Speaking of entertainment, Celebrity Ascent also features six brand-new production shows. Although our sailing is only two nights, we were able to see a few of these new performances. This space has a European vibe from the white arches to the green tiled backsplashes. You’ll find multiple levels of seating in The Sunset Bar, along with plush daybeds surrounding the ship’s aft to sip on a cocktail.

Jewelry and watch collections will be featured at the ship’s Piaget boutique, along with sister brand Cartier, and in a standalone shop by Bvlgari, offering jewelry, handbags, accessories, and other luxe goods. The cruise line believes the premium offerings will be appreciated by Celebrity Cruises’s upscale guests. “My stateroom, 9164, was a Sky Suite, with a king bed facing a private terrace and a clever roll-open mirror that let natural light into the spacious bathroom. There is truly no better spot to connect with the ocean and sea views, and the Sunset Bar was designed with this idea specifically in mind.

It's also the perfect place to watch the sunset and the ship's wake, which is a favorite view of many cruisers. One of the changes made with Celebrity Ascent was also an expanded and redesigned restaurant for Le Voyage, which features a menu created by Chef Daniel Boulud. Similar to Celebrity Beyond, you’ll find an even grander space designated at the heart of the ship. By the end of the night, the Grand Plaza was filled with people dancing and drinking martinis. With Celebrity Ascent's inaugural season just beginning, we were lucky enough to be invited on a two-night media sailing onboard the brand-new ship. As a note, this quick sailing was paid for by the cruise line, but all opinions are my own.

The leafy Hoppen-designed Rooftop Garden is bigger on Celebrity Beyond than on previous vessels with two eye-popping new plunge pools cantilevered seven meters over the edge of the ship. Many of the most tactile spaces onboard have been designed by Paris-based Jouin Manku. An elegant mesh screen that wraps around sections of the upper levels of the Grand Plaza, for example, is made up of 12 different materials that you’re instinctively drawn to run your fingers over.

While this won’t directly impact passengers, cruise fanatics will be excited to know that Celebrity Beyond is captained by Kate McCue. McCue was the first woman to be named the captain of a ‘Mega’ cruise ship when she took the helm of Celebrity Summit in 2015, and she remains a prominent figure in the cruise industry now that she has taken over Celebrity Beyond. And this Celebrity newest ship takes this to new levels, with more expanded open-air spaces where guests can unwind and truly enjoy the calming atmosphere of the ocean. "And then as we can get methanol from its current state to be green methanol, then that ship is able to be net zero." The company hopes to achieve net zero by 2050. Whether you cruise multiple times per year or you're new to cruising, the goal of Royal Caribbean Blog is for it to be a useful resource for keeping up to date with what's new and exciting with Royal Caribbean. Celebrity Ascent may be the fourth ship in the Edge Class, but she is not an exact copy of her sister ships. The plush loungers adorned with pillows and towels were so welcoming, I would have loved to take a nap if I wasn't scrambling to take as many pictures as possible during our 2-night media cruise. We tried two martinis tonight before dinner, including a cream-based white chocolate drink and an apple butterscotch martini. Both were excellent as we listening to the pop music blasting throughout the atrium.

In addition to the large main pool, you’ll also find a couple of whirlpool tubs nearby. The giant FunnelVision video screen and a large stage are nearby, so there’s always something to keep you entertained while swimming. Intended for ages 3+ (must be toilet trained), with adult supervision required for those under age 16. This pool is occasionally closed so that it can be covered and used as additional deck space for major events, such as the sail-away party. And this was a perfect example of how in Alaska, nothing is set in stone. It is common for operators to make adjustments to excursions based on weather, safety concerns and other factors. Helicopter and small plane tours are especially likely to be canceled or adjusted. My advice is to be flexible and not stake the trip's success on any one excursion. Essentially, the ship will sail as close as it safely can (both for the ship and wildlife) to one of a few glaciers.

Disney Magic Itineraries and Home Ports

Cabins on Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy are equipped with a combination of 110- and 220-volt (European) outlets. It's forbidden in cabins and on cabin balconies, and those who violate this rule will face a $250 cleaning fee. If you are on a ship that charges by day instead of by the amount of data used, expect the prices to vary from $12-$36 per day, depending on the speed you select. There are often discounts for buying Wi-Fi access for the length of the cruise. Disney Cruise Line adds a service gratuity of $14.50 per person per day to final bills.

This peaceful chair-lined beach is a quiet spot away from the family beach, where I can sit back and enjoy the view or take a chair down to the water and let the waves crash over me. One thing I love about Disney Cruise Line and Castaway Cay is that there are plenty of adults-only spaces where kids are strictly not allowed. I enjoy seeing the Disney characters on the ship, but love seeing Mickey and his pals even more at Castaway Cay. He has been charged with possession of pornography and transportation of child pornography, per a federal criminal complaint obtained by PEOPLE. Tirso Neri, 44, was charged with possession of pornography and transportation of child pornography.

You can find plenty of full- and half-day tours in the $100 to $300 range that are excellent. But no matter how you choose to spend your days, get out and experience something you can only do in Alaska in at least one or two ports. Another interesting feature of the stateroom onboard the Disney Wish is the mini-drawer refrigerator. It is a pull out drawer, not the typical “cooling box” reminiscent of a mini-fridge found on the other ships. This design makes it difficult to store larger bottles unless you remove the plastic dividers. Midship staterooms on a high deck are generally the most stable, so this might be a necessary choice if you’re prone to seasickness.

Disney Magic Cabins

A true royal feast unfolds… stuffed ravioli, ahi tuna tartare, smoked salmon, lemon & thyme roast chicken, prime rib, and the pun-definitely-intended angel hair pasta with sea scallops. They’ll walk you through all the options, answer your questions, make your reservations for you, and share money-saving tips. The artist renderings of these rooms do not show Magic Portholes, though the deck plans do list them as a feature (which could be old programming from room features on other ships). Instead, over the queen bed, we see a painting depicting Cinderella’s approach to the ball at the castle. Inside staterooms have no windows and no balcony doors (I read that in the voice of your Ghost Host from the Haunted Mansion). So, you will have no private view of the scenery as you sail through the Caribbean or the shoreline of Alaska.

Stateroom Layouts on the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder

The Deluxe Oceanview Staterooms with Verandah come with a queen bed, a sleeper sofa, and a pull-out berth (if sleeping four). This room type also features a sitting area, plenty of closet space, and a private verandah to enjoy the view without leaving your stateroom. One of the most exciting "firsts" on board the Disney Wish is the first-ever Disney attraction at sea. AquaMouse is a family water attraction that brings Mickey shorts to life, and it will include show scenes, lighting and special effects, and more throughout its 760 feet of tubes perched above the upper decks. You can connect many of the cabins on the ship, which is often a much more economical solution for a family looking for more sleeping space (and bathrooms) than upgrading to a multibedroom suite. Roughly speaking, a family of four will pay about 50% more for two cabins than they will for everyone to stay in one cabin of the same size.

All five Disney ships have amazing spaces for kids in the 3-to-12-year-old range in the Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab. The option for those still in swim diapers is some splash areas, such as Nemo's Reef and Dory's Reef. A valid reason to want to sail with Disney is the onboard fun that awaits — especially for those who love Disney characters and stories. I can say with 100% certainty that if you enjoy a nice meal, this is worth the extra $45 once during your cruise. At the top of the "costs extra" list are the restaurants Palo (found on all five ships, though it's Palo Steakhouse on Disney Wish), Remy (on Dream and Fantasy) and Enchante (only on Disney Wish). Each night, your tablemates and servers will move from one restaurant to the next as a team.

Down on deck 4, you’ll also find shuffleboard courts — a classic cruise activity. This offering, presented on select cruises, features a 90s throwback themed dance party on deck. Start the show off with a group sing-along of Into the Unknown, then spin the color wheel to reveal a series of high-energy performances and easy-to-learn dances and group actions. Experience all the glitz and glamor of the red carpet as the crowd clamors to guess who will win the coveted titles of “Most Romantic” and “Most Heroic.” Meanwhile, there’s a problem… the emcee is missing! This fan-favorite musical features songs from about a dozen different Disney films. Nominal fees apply, charged by the half-hour (with a one-hour minimum), and there are discounts for multiple children in the same family.

With the recategorization, all categories are now broken down further with letters like A, B, C, D and E. The letters generally distinguish where on the ship the staterooms are located, with the letter A being the typically most desired location – mid-ship and/or on a higher deck. – While I will give some specific stateroom numbers in some cases, in other cases I’ll just give general guidance. It’s always good planning to check a review of the particular stateroom you have in mind. There are some staterooms out there that have noise or vibration issues. If you need an accessible stateroom, there are options in almost every category.

There are no category 8s on the Magic Class, only the Dream Class. Once again, the word “Family” means they are bigger staterooms that sleep up to 5 and have round tubs. 8As are almost like suites with two large portholes with lots of space, and many have a divider of some kind between the bed and seating area. Not all have bathtubs, and some are more divided than others, so do your research before picking which one works for you. Disney recategorized the 8Ds for 2022, and now 8Ds are 8Cs, while 8Cs are 8Bs. The Category 9 Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom sleeps 3 or 4 people and is the same size as the category 10’s with a similar layout and features.

Carnival Sunshine Cabins & Staterooms on Cruise Critic

In 2024, the parent company (Carnival Corporation) had ~51% stake in the US$64+ billion industry. Everything the sunlight touches on Carnival Sunshine has been doused with an extra dose of fun. There's plenty to find atop this ship, where you can spend your days being kissed by the warm rays of the sun. Visit the biggest Serenity area ever, featuring three decks, plenty of recliners...

Even without a full-on performance, the quality of vocal talent was undeniable. From Noel, our amenable room steward, to Nicole and Tatiana, our capable Alchemy Bar mixologists, every staff member we interacted with was genuine, friendly and cheerful. One passenger even had a T-shirt made featuring a photo of Nicole and Tatiana. Even if you don't have a milestone event to celebrate, Carnival Sunshine provides such a perfect backdrop for your fun that your vacation will feel like a celebration. TPG's Kristy Tolley accepted a free trip from Carnival Cruise Line to cruise on Carnival Sunshine. The opinions expressed below are entirely hers and weren't subject to review by the line.

Take a look at this photo gallery to help you envision your perfect vacation. The bathrooms are functional with an oddly placed outlet for razors, up above the mirror. Showers feature massaging heads and a clingy shower curtain that rarely contains the water. There are also large dispensers with generic shower gel and shampoo. Other bathroom amenities might include a shower cap, mini bottles of shampoo, conditioner and toothpaste and hand soaps.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Flat-screen TVs are installed against the wall, and swivel so you can view them from the couch or bed. But note, unlike the TVs on most newer ships, they are not interactive. The channel options are limited to two or three news channels, cable options with sitcoms and a children's channel. During our sailing, there were no free movies shown on the movie channel. Expansive pools and sport decks have plenty of room to spread out for sunning and more active pursuits; both ships have been retrofitted with massive poolside 270-square-foot LED screens.

For now, though, if you take a Carnival Sunshine cruise, here’s what you can expect.

Smoking is permitted in designated areas on Deck 3 (port side, forward) and Deck 10 (starboard side, midship). Carnival adds an automatic service gratuity of $14.50 to $16.50 per person, per day to final bills, depending on the cabin category. Throughout 2024, Carnival Sunshine will sail year-round four-, five-, six- and eight-night Bahamas and Eastern Caribbean voyages from Charleston. Depending on the itinerary, stops might include Nassau, St. Thomas, St. Maarten, San Juan and the cruise line's private island, Half Moon Cay. I've cruised with Carnival several times, and I'm always impressed with the caliber of talent.

The Pub didn't seem to be the hub for activities as I've seen on other vessels, probably because karaoke, live music and trivia games were held just outside the door in the Ocean Plaza. A fun meal for families is the Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast ($10 per adult and $8 per child aged 14 and under). Held in the main dining room, it kicks off with the lively Seuss-a-palooza Parade led by The Cat in the Hat, Thing 1 and Thing 2. You get to nosh on "green eggs and ham," pancakes, French toast, "Moose Juice" and other whimsical dishes inspired by Seuss' books. The characters stick around for meet-and-greets and photo ops.

Current itinerary of Carnival Sunshine

Oh, you know, a little of this, a little of that… and really, a lot of fun. Basically, think of Ocean Plaza as an indoor entertainment spot that plays host to live music events, plus trivia, dance classes, games and more. And while all that’s going on, it never leaves you far from all the sunny, breezy goodness you get from the great outdoors of the sea. Oh, and when nature’s all done sunning you for the day, it transforms into a night spot that’s seriously stunning.

carnival cruise ships sunshine

However, it's permitted in the casino, which would be fine if I didn't have to pass through the casino to get to certain parts of the ship. But there was no way to avoid the smoky areas if I needed to get to the Liquid Lounge theater from the Ocean Plaza. I can only imagine how problematic that could be for those who are allergic to smoke. The ship's age is starting to show, with a few nicks and marks here and there and visible rust spots on the exterior.

Instead, they’ve got some great options, with something for every age group. WaterWorks features an awesome waterslide that both kids and adults will enjoy. If you’re not looking for thrills, simply enjoy hanging out by one of the pools. For lots of laughs and live music, check out either the Punchliner Comedy Club or the Playlist Productions theatrical performances. Whether you’re hoping for a Broadway-style show or just a family-friendly fun time, you can find both.

Bring the kids and folks along for the cruise you have been dreaming about because this fun-filled ship boasts a variety of offerings to please all age groups. The line's focus on having a great time is infused in every aspect of your cruise experience, and guests are an extension of that ethos. Every passenger I encountered was friendly and ready to participate in all the activities the Fun Squad had planned. The 1996-built/2013-reconstructed Carnival Sunshine cruise ship was initially named "Carnival Destiny". After a major refurbishment in 2013 (USD155 million drydock), the vessel was renamed Sunshine. As class, Carnival Sunshine was the first of three Destiny-class Carnival ships - together with Victory-Radiance and Triumph-Sunrise.

The only thing that tainted our experience was that both times we visited, a family with younger kids monopolized the show with requests. The Carnival website lists the Piano Bar as a 21-plus venue, but no one challenged the family. The small buffet area by the bar often features Latin-inspired bites like empanadas and Cuban sandwiches. Since it's located just beyond the main pool on Deck 9 and beside the Lido Marketplace buffet area, I found it to be an ideal spot to retreat to when buffet area seating was limited. There were two shelves on both sides of the mirror for toiletry storage and a decent amount of counter space for such a small area. The shower included pump dispensers for shampoo and body wash, as well as a retractable clothesline for drying swimwear.

They also have walk-in closets and whirlpool tubs, as well as large sofas, which can fold down, so you can fit as many as five people in each. The 345-square-foot Grand Suites, which have 85-square-foot balconies, are each one big room with a larger L-shaped sofa and a large closet in a separate room adjoining the bathroom. They're designed with marble-topped surfaces, full bathrooms with double-width shower-whirlpool tub combos, bidets, double sinks, marble flooring and mosaic tiles on the walls.

Built in 1996, the Carnival Sunshine cruise ship weighs 103K tons and has 1501 staterooms for up to 3753 passengers served by 1150 crew. You can expect a space ratio of 27 gross tons per passenger on this ship. On this page are the current deck plans for Carnival Sunshine showing deck plan layouts, public venues and all the types of cabins including pictures and videos. As on all Carnival ships, cabins are spacious and comfortable. More than half have an ocean view, and of those, 60% have balconies. For suites and ocean-view cabins that have them, private balconies are outfitted with chairs and tables, adding living space.
